In 1998, on line 5 of the Oslo subway, Gird_09 used his Boss SP-202 to sample the doors closing on one of the train cars, for a track named “Flowers of Your Hate”.
When this sample was mentioned in a Facebook post in December 2021, Greger suggested an album should be made, collecting tracks from various artists all using the sample in one way or another.
The sample was recovered from the sampler a few weeks later, and Gjøran started organizing the project.
“Dørene lukkes” (“The doors are closing”) is a collection of 10 tracks made by various artists all using the same sample as inspiration and part of their composition.
“En reise under jorden” (“A journey beneath the earth”), by Sølvkre comes from a life-long love of all that is subterranean. With a wish to feel safe and free, living beneath the earth. Where the large machines live in tunnels. Centipede like and burrowing through the underground.
With “Forsaken” by Sinister Sister, the artist was inspired to go on a dark inner journey, with the inner subway. Leaning into the brutality of the sound from the doors closing. The sample is used as-is, but also chopped up and processed, as a drone.
In “Industriell Godsvogn” (“Industrial freightcar”) by Skuggimaðr, part of the sample has replaced the bass drum, in a track that uses the heaving repeating sounds of a train as a base for a slow industrial metal track.
Nyheim has in “Mind Grenades” used the sample to make abstract percussive elements and serene ambient soundscapes, that float over a simple looping chord and broken beats. Reverb and delay manipulation were the tools used to make these effects.
Greger’s “Slime 5” was made by cutting up and processing the sample to make new sounds, which were then arranged into a dark droning track.
With “Stress”, Tags has used the imperfections in the sample, by enhancing a perceived rhythm, as the basis for the arrangement. The track is also largely influenced by the association between the subway and that of stress and rush hour.
Faux Clef reversed parts, chopped out some noise that was EQed and got added effects to make drums. Then added more distortion to the sample to get the tune, only accompanied by a single synth to add some flare
Gird_09’s “De virkelig store belønningene” (“The real big prizes”) came about as the artist was astonished by how hard the thud of the door was, when recording the sample. Finding that it was a perfect beat, on many levels. PSSSSH. THUD. PSSSSH. THUD.
On “Endestasjon” (“Final stop”), Proteque has played with haing the harsh sounds of the closing doors next to velvet smooth pads. Artifacts of the sample has been used throughout, and a part of it has been used to make a custom (virtual) guitar amp.
“Biljettkontroll” (“Ticket control”) by Maskinpop came from ignited memories of trying to avoid being asked for a ticket on night time train rides. The sample was cut up to make a dusty industrial drum loop, that was sprinkled with all the poor soul of an 80s hit.
Track notes….
## Uredigert cut’n’paste:
Sølvkre I have always loved everything that is subterranean, ever since I was a small child. It's where I want to live, and feel safe and free. And it's where large machines live in tunnels. Centipede like and burrowing through the underground.
Sinister Sister - Forsaken : The sample inspired me to go on a dark inner journey with the inner subway. The brutality of the sample when the door closes was what I wanted to lean into. The sample is used "as is", but choped up and also used as a drone after a lot of processing.
Skuggimaðr - Industriell Godsvogn : In Industriell Godsvogn I wanted to use the industrial heavy repeating sounds of a train as a base for a slow industrial metal track. A part of the sample is used directly on a trigger that is triggered by the bass drum microphone and replacing the bass drum sound.
Nyheim - Mind Grenades: The sample provided was used to make some abstract percussive elements and serene ambient soundscapes floating in the air over a simple looping chord and broken beats. Various reverb and delay manipulations was all that was used to make these effects.
Tags - Stress : What immediately caught my attention listening to the sample were the imperfections in the recording, the crackling noises when the mic gave out. I thought I could hear a rhythm, which I ended up using as a basis for my arrangement after some pitching and transformation. My associations with the subway is often that of rush hour and stress, which influenced my decision to make the track an attempt to represent the quiet esperation of a back-and-forth struggle between the daily routine, the straight-forward rhythmic sections, and the encroaching chaos represented by the willful dissonance and disharmony. The sample is used in various forms throughout the track, but also played close to its original form in both the intro and the outro.
Faux clef - Låtnavn Ukjent: listened to the sample a couple of times, reversed parts, chopped out nice noise, eqed and some effects and got some drums, i distorted it more and got the tune. Nothing but effects and this sample. Added one synth for some flare.
Gird_09 When I recorded this sample I was astonished by how hard the thud of the door was. It was a perfect beat, on so many levels. PSSSSH. THUD. PSSSSH. THUD.
Proteque - Endestasjonen : The harsh sound of a door closing. I wanted to play around with using that next to the velvet smooth pads. I used the artifacts of the sample a lot through the track as elements. The Sample is also used on its own some places. On the guitars I used part of the sample as an impulse response to make a custom guitar amp.
Biljettkontroll First and foremost the sample ignited my dramatic memories of my youths surfing on the kollektivtrafikens nattvagnar trying to avoid the biljettkontrollanter. Second and least I had this urge for a dusty industrial drum loop where I cut up the sample to smithereens and sprinkled it all the poor soul of Laura Branigans Self Control. The full sample was also used in reverse for that trademark build up swoosh sound known on all dance floors from here to Karachi. And then the wolves came.
